MAY 2016

TASTING WINE

05012016 The first winery I chose was Donnachiara. I had been to the winery before and had tasted the wines with Ilaria Petitto a number of times in NYC. I wanted to visit again to see what was new and how the wines had developed. Tasting Wine with Lunch at Donnachiara The winery is located in Montefalcione in the province of Avellino. Winemaker Angelo Valentino led us through a tasting of the wines. Tasting Wine with Lunch at Donnachiara | Charles Scicolone on Wine
05022016 Taurasi is in southern Italy, in the region of Campania, where it grows on volcanic soils. The soil lends the wine its most notable characteristics – black fruit flavors followed by smoke, ash, tobacco and black olives. Kicking Off 2015 – Good Wine & Good Food | Clō Wines
05032016 The steaming hot, plate-size pizza in a hole-in-the-wall pizzeria in the Spaccanapoli section of beautiful Naples, is an epiphany, and that overpriced Italianate snooty so-called trattoria in midtown has no clue what true pizza is. Summer in Italy, of course | Mara Writer
05042016 The grape itself is purported to be of ancient origin and is thought to be the same as the Colombina mentioned by the Roman author Pliny.  It reached the peak of its popularity towards the end of the 19th Century as it was very heavily replanted into the phylloxera ravaged vineyard areas of southern Italy. 05052016 The neighborhood of Vomero has little in common with the historic center; the classics giving way to the avant-garde, but one thing hasn’t changed. Take the cable car to Morghen station and walk a few blocks to the Castel Sant’Elmo for a view of the city in all its splendor. Naples, Worldly Pleasures | in – LAN
05062016 This colorful apartment building conveys the magical, hearty feel of the city of Naples. Illuminated by the afternoon sun, the vivid colors and distinct shadows contrast nicely. This was a chance photo, snapped when I luckily looked up while strolling along the busy streets. Naples, Italy | Adam Allegro

05082016 Rione Terra, is the ancient village of the historical center of Pozzuoli on the bay of Naples which was abandoned in the 1970s due to the slow rise or descent of the Earth’s surface caused by underground magma activity. Today the village is being restored by an amazing project funded by UNESCO which encapsulates more than 2,000 years of history in one place. Rione Terra Pozzuoli Tour 255 | Passion For Italy
05092016 A 40-second film by Tom Cannavan showing ancient Aglianico vines in the Sannio area of Campania, southern Italy. Believed to be 200 years old, the vines date from before Phyloxerra, and produce a ridiculously small number of grapes, which the Cantina of Taburno bottles as a wine called Bue Apis. 05112016 Praiano a small town situated on the Amalfi Coast. We stayed at the most beautiful hotel I've ever laid eyes on, Casa Angelina. The days ran together in Praiano as we spent the majority of our time relaxing by the pool or beach. The crystal clear mediterranean mixed with the sheer cliffs and rugged shoreline made this my favorite place on earth. Tique Travel: Italy Edition | Ruffles & Lace
05122016 My hotel offered a nice city guide that can be accessed via the smartphone as well. It won’t be too easy to find the Pedamentina a San Martino, Naples former pedestrian paths that go up the hill, connecting its residents to the lower, central areas. The stairs have over 414 steps and were built in the 15th century. It’s a rather easy path and you won’t have any problem walking up the hill, but you can also choose to walk them downhill. 05142016 The first night I arrived at my friend’s house in Pozzuoli, a suburb of Naples, and we went out to a typical modern restaurant there. They recommended the octopus salad; I tried the octopus salad. Verdict: amazing. Naples and southern Italy are well-known for the way they use the bounty of the Mediterranean Sea in their cooking. Seafood there is known as ‘frutti di mare’ — literally, “fruit of the sea.” Guest Post: Know Your Food - Neapolitan Fruits of the Sea | A Dangerous Business
05152016 Pizza, and right off the bat we think of Sorbillo, da Attilio, di Matteo, da Michele, Antica Pizzeria Port’Alba, I Decumani, La Masardona… seafood, and though food snobs might cringe, the restaurants at the foot of the Castel dell’Ovo are all wonderful and our favourite is the Transatlantic where you will find the Neapolitans dining there too. 05222016 We were ooh-ing and aah-ing inside the bus. It certainly took my breath away. It’s cheap transportation too! The fare from Napoli to Sorrento is only about 3 Euros. Then the tour bus costs 16 Euros to and from Amalfi. So that’s about 22 Euros of transportation expenses in total. I say not too shabby for such incredible views and travel experiences. 05242016 Also known as Trebulano, Casavecchia is a rediscovered red grape variety from Campania. Local legend has it that a single, forgotten vine was discovered among the ruins of Pontelatone, Italy, a gnarled old vine with a trunk 15 inches (40cm) wide, from which cuttings were taken and used to graft new vines. 05252016 Coda di Volpe is a grape that hails from the Campania region. There are both white and red grapes with this name, although the red is much more rare. I have had the white version often but have never tried the red version of this grape variety. Apparently, according to sources, Pliny gave the grape vine its name. Some say it was due to the color of the grape, others due to the shape. Italian Indigenous Varieties: Coda di Volpe Bianca from Campania | avvinare

05282016 The bread Lemon looks like a fruit similar to a cedar tree, with thin outer skin and the inner white part well developed, hence its definition “bread.” This special feature that sets it apart and makes it a product of excellence is surely due to the particular climate of Procida and to the skilful care of some local farmers who preserve the ancient traditions of the island culture.
