POMPEII COMES BACK TO LIFE, WITH ITS FRESCOES AND ITS ICONIC PAINTED DECORATIONS The title ‘The Villa of Mysteries’ alludes to the ruins of an ancient Roman house found in the excavation of Pompeii. The charm of the past, of a city like Pompeii - their lavish decorations - its history, places and traditions: all of this lives on, reinterpreted in a contemporary way and with an eye on the future, in the Nuova Pompei collection of wallpapers by the designer Vito Nesta for Misha. The collection contains four different patterns, sharing skillful use of warm, welcoming colors: Architetture Grottesche, Paradiso, Mosaico and Sannita. Misha | Nuova Pompei | IFDM

SUMMER DRINKS LIKE THE ROMANS DID - IN CAMPANIA! Walking into a Roman cave. This is Campania, filled with hidden gems, stratified with tradition, and teeming with profound viticulture. I was visiting La Sibilla, a winery named after the homonymous oracle who was believed to reside just a few miles away. The estate lies in the Procida promontory where the Campi Flegrei appellation shines for its personality due to old, ungrafted vines on volcanic soils facing the sea. Even the faint Falanghina, emerges here with quality thanks to tart citrus fruit, vibrancy and chalky minerality. 30 wines from Campania to try in 2023 | Decanter

'A GANG OF DOCTORS KILLED ME' Doctors are generally held in high regard today, but Romans of the first century were skeptical, even scornful, of medical practitioners. In his “Natural History,” Pliny the Elder endeavored to speak out against the medical profession. Scalpels, needles, tweezers, probes, hooks, chisels and drills are as much part of today’s standard medical tool kit as they were during Rome’s imperial era. The most renowned set turned up in the 1770s at Pompei's so-called House of the Surgeon, which was buried under a layer of ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. A COMPELLING RHYTHMS AND SENSE OF MOVING Her deep knowledge and understanding of her tradition, and the originality of the arrangements. Hiram Salsano’s focus is the traditional music of southern Italy, in particular that of her home region, the mountain areas of Cilento in Campania. This isn’t a taranta/pizzica album. Salsano’s sources and music are much more varied. The singing is wonderful; liberatingly gutsy and uninhibited while very much in control. She makes smart use of vocal looping to create rhythms and drones. The songs are in Campania’s Cilentano and Napoletano dialects. Hiram Salsano - Bucolica | RootsWorld

"I'M WORKING WITH A ROBOT TO RECONSTRUCT POMPEII'S SHATTERED FRESCOES" Cultural and heritage researcher Arianna Traviglia uses robotic technology to painstakingly reconstruct 2,000-year-old mural paintings in the Archaeological Park. These are a type of mural painting on wet plaster. The project is called RePAIR. Pompeii contains thousands of fresco fragments, and it is close to impossible for a human to reconstruct all the irregular shards into big, meaningful paintings. Technology now allows us to reassemble them from myriad pieces: the robot we use is equipped with two soft humanoid arms, high-definition scanners, cameras and 3D digital-recognition software. THE GRAPE VARIETAL THAT
DOES BEST IN THE SANNIO

05012023 Campania wine should be a part of the conversation, as the region is not only one of the oldest wine-producing territories in Italy, it is also today considered one of the very best. Benevento is home to arguably the most appealing and varietally pure examples of Falanghina in Campania. Offering lively acidity along with beautiful aromas of pear, honeysuckle, quince and sometimes a hint of saffron, these are irresistible when consumed from two to four years of age, and pair beautifully with a range of foods. Most versions are steel-aged, but some producers also craft wood-aged versions that offer greater intensity. Appreciating The Wines Of Campania | Forbes

05042023 On an island off the coast of Naples, Russell Page worked with Lady Susanna Walton, wife of the composer Sir William Walton, at their home La Mortella to create an unexpectedly lush garden. The Waltons bought their then barren plot of land on the volcanic island of Ischia in the mid-1950s. Called Le Mortelle after the wild myrtle bushes which grew on the rocks, the land had neither a house nor, at that time, water. Susana Walton secured the services of Russell Page early on in the project, and he advised not only on the garden but also on the positioning of the house.
