AUGUST 2017

MEDITERRANEAN DIET

08012017 The menu at Cantina del Marchese was perhaps based on an even older local gastronomic tradition. Just off the main square of Marina di Camerota, this was a feast of salumi, cheeses, cavatelli pasta, porcini mushrooms and sott'olio. But also rare dishes even for us: lagana, 'ciaurella' (bean soup) and the rediscovered 'maraccucciata' or dark polenta. A Grand Amalfi Coast and Cilento Blog Tour | Delicious Italy
08022017 I choose to continue my walk following the eastern street which leads to the agora space of Poseidonia, a meeting place devoted to commercial and political activities. After five more minutes I pass the remains of a particular circular building to my left, made of concentric steps completely carved out by the natural limestone, which housed the meetings of the ekklesia (assembly) of all adult male citizens entitled to participate in political life. 08042017 The Amalfi Coast - a place you have to see to believe, and even then it still seems unreal - is prized for its beautiful beaches and relaxed ambiance, as well as its proximity to the island of Capri, and there’s an air of poshness that comes with the hazy, sunny days. Women saunter around in delicate, flowy dresses while men sport their finest linen and loafers—it’s an attractive place in every sense. 08052017 Sitting proudly on the coastline of the Sorrentine Peninsula, overlooking the most irresistible shades of blue skies that melt into the Mediterranean Sea, the Amalfi Coast has a kind of elegance about it that never goes out of style. From the colorful homes carved into the dizzying cliffs of Positano to the natural beauty of Ravello, it’s easy to see why its postcard-perfect backdrop is one of Italy’s most beloved little gems. 08062017 In Campania, expect wines made of Aglianico, a red grape introduced to the region millennia ago by the Greeks; Fiano, a white grape planted in the region for hundreds of years and first mentioned by name in the 13th century; the white Greco di Tufo, a light-shaded grape introduced by the Greeks to southern Italy 2,500 years ago; Coda di Volpe, also grown in the Campania region since ancient times; and other “new” grapes. 08072017 Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano just east of Naples, and the organically farmed vineyards of Villa Dora are on the lower slopes of the volcano, inside the national park that surrounds it. The soil, ground-up pumice really, looks like black Grape-Nuts, and the wines are strikingly flavorful and distinctive. There is no known scientific reason why certain minerals in the soil would affect the flavors of the wines grown in that soil, but I have to think there's a connection. 08082017 Our trip to the Amalfi Coast provided the perfect blend of eating, cooking, wine, and culture in settings that were off the beaten path. Thanks to Carol's exquisite taste, we experienced the best of the Amalfi Coast from the picturesque villa where we stayed, to the cooking and eating experiences, to the tours of coastal towns, to family-run vineyards, lemon orchards, and restaurants. 08092017 The Royal Palace of Caserta is considered the last great expression of Italian Baroque. Along the park's central alleyway, which is three kilometers long, visitors can take in a series of magnificent fountains with mythological inspirations. Its "English Gardens" one of the largest and oldest picturesque gardens created in Europe. Royal Gardens of Europe: Fountains And Waterfalls at The Royal Palace of Caserta | News18
08102017 The palazzo is closed to public, but the nearby beach offers daily rentals of lounge chairs and umbrellas. With the Palazzo Donn’Anna (Via Posillipo, Naples) to one side and Mt. Vesuvius to the other, its hard to imagine a stretch of sand with a more interesting backdrop. Palazzo Donn’Anna in Naples | An American In Rome
08112017 Forget the Vespa. You’re taking a boat to lunch. Da Adolfo, a casual awning-covered seafood shack that opened in 1966 (and hasn’t changed much in the decades since), sits right on Laurito Beach, and is a five-minute ride from the Positano pier (the boat with the red fish sign on its mast acts as a free shuttle). “I love the sea urchin, and the view is so beautiful,” says Bidermann. 08122017 Legend has it that mermaids sunned themselves on the rocks of Sorrento, and lured sailors to their deaths with their siren songs. Many centuries later, the famous song Come Back to Sorrento was written in 1902 and performed by everyone from Luciano Pavarotti to Frank Sinatra. 08132017 A fresh new mural in Airola. At the location of the wall a lot of people of all ages come and relax in the afternoon (mostly elderly), so I wanted to depict something very common to everyone… Preparation of a dinner. In Airola, onion is one of the most popular ingredients in cooking (as it is in Greece). “Preparing dinner” by Dimitris Taxis in Airola, Italy | StreetArtNews
08142017 Here you can live as a local, staying in an organic farmhouse and tasting amazing local products accompanied by a glass of Aglianico, the local wine. Perhaps what is most incredible of the Regional Park Taburno Camposauro is the village of Sant’Agata de’ Goti, an ancient city perched on the plateau of a tuff hill. Getting here is exciting and its streets, its roofs, the monuments will leave you breathless. And from here an interesting itinerary begins, to discover the beautiful landscapes of Benevento region. 08152017 For our stay we checked in to the a deluxe superior sea view room, which really is just a fancy name for a beautifully white and bright interior, ample space, and an unrivalled view of Positano and the sea. Absolutely no attention to detail is overlooked, with a lush corner plant, colourful mosaic tiles, art work throughout the room and a beautiful terrace lined with flowers and overlooking the sea. 08162017 We revel in the amore with our stay at Casa Angelina. It's in Praiano, Positano twinkles in the distance at night. We sit by the pool on the terrace under the shade of lemon trees and drink cocktails brought by attentive staff. Fellow guests loll in the sun. Everybody seems to be in love. 08172017  “Southern Italy is a great reference for us thanks to its colours, perfumes and atmospheres,” says Domenico Dolce of Dolce & Gabbana. The designers are constantly inspired by the fabrics, prints and colours of the coastline. “Napoli, Capri, Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento are all places that represent the Italian spirit at its best.” Positano chic: why fashion fell for the Amalfi coast | Financial Times
08182017 Although the fitting process for a pair of Ambrosi Napoli trousers is said to take just 30 seconds, the result is a pair of trousers so well-fitted that men have flown Ambrosi - all expenses included - around the globe in order to acquire made-to-measure pairs. 08192017 A highlight of her time abroad was the trip her program took to Cilento. They traveled to this region in southern Italy in order to investigate whether the Mediterranean diet was still alive. A Closer Look at Food | DePauw University
08202017 Casalbuono beans are the latest product in Cilento to be safeguarded. Originally an alluvial plain, the small village’s terrain is lapped by the crystal waters of the Calore River. The terrain has, in fact, always been a great site for cultivating this extraordinary product. Today it is known as the place for bean production. Cilento: Home to the Mediterranean Diet | i-Italy
08212017 This time on the island of Ischia, I’ve chosen a humble one-star, the Pensione di Lustro. Why? This balcony connects to a room where Truman Capote, one of my favorite writers, stayed for three months, in 1949, after his first book, Other Voices, Other Rooms was published. “You will sleep where Truman slept,” Maria Teresa, a kind and weary looking signora, softly announced, rolling the “r” in Truman. 08222017 While hundreds of applicants hoped to be selected to participate in the Sirenland Writers Conference, only a handful of them were chosen to attend the week-long event in Positano, Italy. The conference limited its selection to 10 writers for each of three workshops in mixed-genre, fiction and memoir writing. 08232017 Even today there are visible signs of the illustrious past of Salerno, in the old city, which it’s called “medieval jewel” for its richness of churches and palaces of the Lombard and Normand period. The City of Salerno – City of Princes, City of Medicine | SalernoTour.it
08242017 Punta Campanella, at the far end of the Sorrento Peninsula, is a protected natural area straddling the provinces of Salerno and Naples. Architecture historian Cesare De Seta has noted it is the shape of a “sharp wedge”, “rocky, bare and scorched by the sun on its outermost tip, eroded by the salty air. The tallest part of the promontory is almost golden when the sun reaches the zenith, and pink at sunset. Punta Campanella: geology, myths and beauty | Italian Ways
08252017 Rightly considered one of the nicest places of the Mediterranean, it is rich in cliffs, coves and beaches. Picturesque caves can be found both underwater and above the sea level, the most famous of which, The Alabaster Cave, has wonderful stalactites, stalagmites and formations of alabaster. A Realm of Astounding Beauty | Why in Italy
08262017 The “cauraro” is a soup of anchovies and vegetables, prepared with zucchini, onions, garlic, chicory, wild fennel and fava beans. The vegetables used were in fact wild ones that could be easily found in the countryside. Today you can enjoy both versions of cauraro, with anchovies and sardines, and enjoy these typical Pisciotta seafood specialties. Anchovies and vegetables in the typical dishes of Cilento | Charminly
08272017 Here the wonderful sea alternates with the luxuriant Mediterranean scrub made of olive trees and vineyards, the cliffs and the medieval towers that contribute to create a breathless landscape of uncontested environmental value. The point of main tourist attraction of the entire area is Porto Infreschi with its little beach, often mentioned as the most beautiful beach of Italy. 08282017 Today we are going to Acciaroli, between the National Park of Cilento and the Diano Valley that is only half an hour far from Salerno. The first thing that welcomes us is its large beach of thin and gold sand, which has had a blue flag for ages, and that protects the white lily, a particular class of lily flower. 08292017 Inside the monastery of Teatini, once the temple of Castor, was born the pizzeria La Sorelle Bandiera, where leavening is constantly monitored by observing environmental parameters that have been identified to make our pizza unique. The only one where the mixture has a natural leavening process approximately 24 hours in an environment made of tuff using products exclusively made in Italy. The secret, then, is geothermal energy, which is built into the tuff of Naples. The Best Pizza in Italy? | Timothy Lutts
08302017 Arrive somewhere as explosively chaotic as Naples and you wonder how you’re going to find a way in; it’s so clamorous and energetic, with its Vespas and vendors, kissing couples and cobalt sea, that you feel an outsider. But if you know where to find a good sfogliatella (Neapolitan clam-shaped pastry filled with orange-scented ricotta and candied fruit), you’re getting there. Later on, head to a good pizzeria and, after that, a hole in the wall for gelato. The secret to eating like a local this summer | The Telegraph
08312017 Valeria came to Campania because of her husband’s job. What changed her initial view was the reception she received first from locals in the Posillipo district, and then from the city as a whole: “I didn’t know anyone, I had neither friends nor relatives. But after three days the mother of a child who was at nursery school with my daughter added me to a WhatsApp group with other mums and organized a small party. We’ve become great friends.
