L'AGLIANICA CICLOSTORICA EVENT, PEDALING ALONG THE MOUNTAINS OF IRPINIA Aglianico “alli-yawn-nico” is a full-bodied red wine. The most critically rated Aglianico wines come from the region of Taurasi. Most collectors of this wine will agree that Taurasi tends to deliver the most floral expression of the wine with brooding aromas of rose and sour cherries. This wine is also likely the least approachable upon release with most needing at least an 8 year cool down period to account for ripping high acidity and grippy tannins. HYPERPINIAN AND HIS BIG BROTHERS Taurasi DOCG, located in southern Italy’s Campania region, produces complex, age-worthy wines, most famously from Aglianico, a local red grape. “The origin of vineyards in the Taurasi area dates back to the Etruscan period, where the vines were grown at heights with different shapes”. These ancient techniques, colloquially called ‘starseta’ or ‘raggiera’, intersperse vines among cover crops, grains, olive groves, nut trees, and fruit orchards. HYPERPINIAN AND THE IRPINIA DOC DESIGNATION REMAIN THE SAME Aglianico is a red wine grape now thought to be native to southern Italy. It produces full-bodied red wines that show musky berry flavors with firm tannins and good aging potential. Even when grown in hot climates, is capable of retaining high levels of acidity. The structure and richness of Aglianico make it a popular grape for blending in southern Italy. In Campania, it is frequently blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot in the production of some IGT wines. Aglianico Wines - Italian Red Wine Grape | Wine-Searcher

THE OLD REGION OF IRPINIA (WHOSE SYMBOL IS THE GREY WOLF) Striking landscapes encompassing wooded hillsides, winding rivers, majestic mountains and a cool breeze that contrasts greatly with the warm coastal areas. This is Irpinia. Aglianico is a hard grape to grow: it’s late ripening, its thin skin is prone to mildew and it can be challenging to harvest this grape with several vineyard passages required in order to pick healthy grapes. It’s a difficult variety to manage in terms of winemaking too: when young, it tends to be tannic, acidic, rather harsh and sometimes rustic. UNCONVENTIONAL AGLIANICO Many winemakers in Irpinia acknowledge significant differences in microclimate among the villages that make up the appellation. While Taurasi itself is known for wines that are more elegant and immediately expressive, hamlets such as Castelfranci, Montemarano, and Paternopoli yield more structured and austere examples, requiring longer cellaring before revealing their true complexity. Ilaria Petitto of Donnachiara notes that, “we try and produce Taurasi with elegance and restraint, but this territory can give very powerful, almost wild wines.” Masters Of Aglianico: Faces Of Southern Italy’s Most Important Red Wine Grape | Forbes

HIP-HIP IRPINIA! Eremo Nero, born from the vinification of Aglianico grapes grown on volcanic soils in the Paternopoli countryside. The composition of these sandy soils, with very fine and particularly permeable ash, is the ideal condition for obtaining high quality grapes and still red wines rich in anthocyanins and tannins. UNDER THE HIRPINIAN MOON The winds from the land, the Mistral and the Tramontana alternate with those from the sea, the Libeccio, the Ostro and the Scirocco. The result is a unique Irpinia microclimate of its kind. The characteristics of the soil influence the qualities of the grapes which, in turn, will determine the characteristics of the wines. CAMPANIA, LIKE IS NEIGHBORS, IS MAKING GREAT WINES Its Irpinia region alone, nestled in the cool Apennine foothills, is home to three excellent wines (the whites Greco and Fiano, and the red, ageworthy Aglianico). Thanks to technology and changing climate, perhaps, today’s featured Mastroberardino Aglianico Irpinia is a juicy, fruity, cherry-berry treat. It’s no “fruit bomb,” though, but something more balanced and complex, full of flavor but not over-oaked, and with alcohol held to a rational 13%. Campania earns our respect | Wineloverspage

MUSEUM VINEYARDS IN IRPINIA The climate is extremely particular and the most important reason behind the fascinating wines that Irpinia produces. Another remarkable aspect of Irpinia is the vast amount of old and extremely old vineyards. There are many vineyards 80-90-100 years old, but others are 150 years old and a few of them even 200 years or older. It makes Irpinia a museum of some of the world´s most antique vineyards and this alone can be a reason for many international wine experts to visit Irpinia. Irpinia, Strong and Unique | Paul Balke

FELIX, IN VINO FELICITAS What will it take for Campania to receive the respect it deserves? For nearly two decades, I've followed these wines and watched as the region slowly continues to improve. When was the last time an international marketing campaign promoted the wines of Irpinia? This region encompasses Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, arguably Campania's most important categories. Many producers lack a clear understanding of Campania’s wines in the world market and what the end consumer expects from them. Campania: Change Is Imminent…Or Is It? | Vinous
