A TOAST TO ART: GILLO DORFLES AND WINES OF PAESTUM Set against the dramatic backdrop of the Archaeological Park of Paestum, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the hotel hosted countless intimate conversations, impromptu lectures, and artistic musings between Dorfles and the hotel’s owners of Pagano family, with whom he shared a profound friendship. Dorfles found in Paestum—and in the warm embrace of the Savoy Hotel —a spiritual connection between ancient culture and contemporary aesthetics. MY JOURNEY TO THE SUN Paestum was founded by the Greeks in about 600BC and has three spectacular temples among other buildings. In the museum the real gem is the Tomb of the Diver: five painted panels from a tomb, one of which depicts a youth diving from a great height into a river or the sea. Some regard it as a symbol of the dive into the unknown that death represents; others believe it may be a yet more complex allegory. THE COLONIES DON'T JUST LIMITED THEMSELVES TO COPYNG THE WORKS OF THE MOTHERLAND A stone pedestal with steps, coloured terracotta roof decorations with lion-shaped dripstones, an extraordinary gorgon and a moving depiction of Aphrodite. Then there are seven bull heads, an altar with groves in the stones to collect sacrifice liquids and hundreds of ex votos, with votive offerings with images of Eros riding a dolphin in the way of Poseidon, the god who gave his name to the city, standing out. Tiziana D'Angelo, the Director of the Paestum archaeological site, told that the dig was set to "change the recorded history of ancient Poseidonia". PAESTUM, ITALY - "YOUNG PEOPLE WERE [SEEN AS] THE HOPE OF SOCIETY... IN THE UNIVERSE OF ANCIENT GREECE" At the end of 2021, Tonio Hölscher, 82, published a slender book titled The Swimmer of Paestum, in which he disassociates the fresco from symbolism. Rather, he proposes that the image simply depicts a real scene: a young man jumping into water. “It’s a book that is partly academic, but also designed for a wide audience, with attention to the emotion that paintings can arouse.” Has the mystery behind the fresco in the Tomb of the Diver been solved? | El Pais

THREE DORIC TEMPLES, DATING FROM ABOUT 600 TO 450BC The first time she set eyes on Paestum was as a child when visiting the site with her family. Now its majestic temples have a new guardian: Tiziana D’Angelo is one of the youngest people to direct a big Italian cultural site and is among the few female directors. A museum is planned at nearby Velia, where the Greek philosopher Parmenides was born, while more space will open at Paestum’s museum this year. 'I wept with joy’: young director made guardian of Italy’s temples of Paestum | The Guardian
