EVERYTHING YOU WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT POMPEII The archaeological evidence suggests that the eruption took place later in AD 79. Carbonised pomegranates – a fruit that ripens in the autumn – have been found in both Pompeii and at Oplontis, just outside the city, and there is also evidence of grape pressing taking place, an activity that also occurred later in the year.
