MAY 2023

THE GRAPE VARIETAL THAT
DOES BEST IN THE SANNIO

05012023 Campania wine should be a part of the conversation, as the region is not only one of the oldest wine-producing territories in Italy, it is also today considered one of the very best. Benevento is home to arguably the most appealing and varietally pure examples of Falanghina in Campania. Offering lively acidity along with beautiful aromas of pear, honeysuckle, quince and sometimes a hint of saffron, these are irresistible when consumed from two to four years of age, and pair beautifully with a range of foods. Most versions are steel-aged, but some producers also craft wood-aged versions that offer greater intensity. Appreciating The Wines Of Campania | Forbes

05042023 On an island off the coast of Naples, Russell Page worked with Lady Susanna Walton, wife of the composer Sir William Walton, at their home La Mortella to create an unexpectedly lush garden. The Waltons bought their then barren plot of land on the volcanic island of Ischia in the mid-1950s. Called Le Mortelle after the wild myrtle bushes which grew on the rocks, the land had neither a house nor, at that time, water. Susana Walton secured the services of Russell Page early on in the project, and he advised not only on the garden but also on the positioning of the house. 05052023 Despite being on the cusp of celebrating his football team’s first league title in 33 years and his first as club president, Aurelio De Laurentiis is still struggling to accept Napoli’s shortcomings in some of the past Scudetto races. “Sometimes we have finished second, but we could have finished first if… I feel I have won other championships, certainly that of honesty”, claimed the 73-year-old in his controversial comment. One of the most awaited events by the British and in general by anyone who loves the history of royalty; the event will be accompanied by the Royal Opera House of London, conducted by the English conductor but with Italian citizenship Antonio Pappano – born of Italian parents who left Castelfranco in Miscano [province of Benevento] in 1958 to seek his fortune -, who is of the London institution musical director since 2002. 05072023 The Red House was built next to an ancient Aragonese tower, erected by the eccentric Colonel John Clay MacKowen. Soon it was enriched by the same colonel with archaeological finds. Some finds, moreover, come from his numerous travels. The house passed to his heirs and then to other owners, when the Superintendence for Architectural Heritage and Landscape of Naples acquired the building and, after careful restoration, used it as an exhibition space, granting its use to the City of Anacapri. 05082023 In the historic city of Naples, football goes very much beyond the game. Because Napoli is Naples. And Naples is Napoli. People had begun to celebrate among a sensational atmosphere that enveloped the city from Thursday morning, while they just had to undergo a 90-minute wait to officially celebrate a triumph that has been in the pipeline since February. Napoli's Scudetto is also a spark that can ignite a new golden age in Naples - a city that has become known for its philosophy, history, art, food and wine and geological beauty. More and more people are now coming to visit which has huge economic benefits. Napoli's first Scudetto in 33 years has the potential to revitalise the whole city of Naples... | Daily Mail
05092023 "I Suoni degli Dei" is one of the most eagerly-awaited events for trekking and music lovers. The event takes place on the Path of the Gods, the famous nature trail suspended between the sky and the sea. It winds from Bomerano until Nocelle. The Church of Santa Maria a Castro and the Convent of San Domenico, reachable from Praiano through a long staircase of about 1000 steps that lead to 350 meters above sea level, and the Colle Serra at about 600 meters above sea level and Li Cannati are the stage of this musical festival. 05112023 Underwater archaeology in Italy came of age here, and the site continues to drive research, innovation, and discovery. Excavations in the now-underwater nymphaeum showed that the walls were clad in marble and had also originally been covered in a layer of glass mosaic and shells: a glittering marine cave. The reconstructed space is just one highlight of the underwater archaeological park. This area includes the remains of at least two imperial villas. To the east is evidence of a commercial port, called the Portus Julius. “This site,” says archaeologist Fabio Pagano, director of the Archaeological Park of the Campi Flegrei, “it’s not simple.” Lost Roman Resort | Archaeology Magazine
05122023 The “Mosaic of all records” has been capturing, with its magnetic beauty, the attention of visitors. The restoration of the mosaic is going to be a complex one: conservation, positioning, weight (approximately seven tons). The five-metre Alexander Mosaic, composed of 2mn tiny tesserae placed to represent astonishingly naturalistic figures and vivid emotion, is a glory of Naples’ National Archaeological Museum, but damaged and fragile. After years out of sight, its restoration, repairing cracks and detached tiles, smoothing bulges and hollows, allowing colour to shine, is unveiled on May 29. 05132023 Campania climbs once again on the Italian podium of the 2023 Blue Flags. San Mauro Cilento (half tower) is the new entry. The Cilento location was surprisingly excluded last year, but only due to bureaucratic problems. But the Blue Flags for beaches are not the only recognitions awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). There are also those for tourist landings. Once again they were en plein Agropoli, Palinuro, Casal Velino and Acciaroli and Marina di Camerota. Cilento drags Campania: here are all the Blue Flag 2023 locations|Italy 24 Press News
05142023 Suddenly, the idyllic images that fill my Instagram feed are not from Positano and Amalfi, but Naples. Shows such as My Brilliant Friend and Stanley Tucci’s Searching for Italy, and Paolo Sorrentino’s film The Hand of God have shown the city’s more positive and enticing side. Its decayed yet beautiful buildings appear as backdrops to fashion campaigns, its vibrant streets are the subjects of chic coffee-table tomes and the city’s cuisine has become the ultimate foodporn. Along with millions of others, I even found myself obsessing over local sandwich-maker and TikTok sensation. Viva Napoli! Why Naples Is The Place To Be In 2023 - ELLE
05152023 The archaeological research led to the discovery of the Ipogei dei Togati, the Ipogei dei Melograni, and other unknown monuments. A group of researchers used muography to detect the presence of possible cavities in the underground of Naples‘ Sanità district. One of the most significant structures discovered is a hidden Hellenistic chamber that most likely houses a burial. The muons were installed 18 meters below the Sanità district’s current street level to measure muon flux for about a month. 05172023 The title of the exhibition rereads, in a positive light, Anna Maria Ortese's famous novel. Still, from the alleys of rione Sanità where the artist was born and still lives, the sea of Mergellina [a coastal district of the city of Naples] cannot be seen, its light breeze does not carry there. The boys' gaze does not rest on the horizon line, but instead on the peeling walls of buildings. 05192023 Tom Alberto Bull travels to Ischia, a perfect little gem in the glittering Gulf of Naples. From the moment the landscape appeared on the horizon as I made the short trip across the bay I couldn’t wait to disembark. The central peak, Mount Epomeo, towers 788 metres above sea level, covered in luscious green trees which some say give the island its nickname. We had an ambitious itinerary to squeeze into two days and time was of the essence. We hopped on one of the local buses and crossed the island to our hotel, the Punta Chiarito Resort. Almost a landmark in itself, this beautiful resort sits atop a cliff overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. 48 hours in... Ischia | Italia! magazine
05202023 Painting on a large scale is an expression of an artist's ambition and ego, allowing Chase Palmer to create a world that the viewer can nearly step into. All three works are loosely adapted from the Divine Comedy, with Space Invaders representing Paradiso, Destination Compaction representing Purgatorio, and Little Divers representing Inferno. The subject matter is intended to be entertaining rather than strictly religious or moralizing, and viewers are left to decide whether they can see themselves in these painted worlds full of opportunists, gluttons, and heretics. 05212023 The event launched the archeological site as a magnificent new spot for contemporary art, the latest addition to Italy’s growing landscape of cultural heritage institutions commissioning and exhibiting. 05222023 The cozy feel of the trip was the prevalence of family businesses and the passion that accompanies them. The first example of this was seen in Sorrento at I Giardini di Cataldo – a small family-run limoncello factory in Sorrento. The Espositos’ passion for their groves and products is evident in the attention and quality of the things they offer.
