HOW TO CLEAN A NUMBER OF LARGE COLOURFUL FRESCOES IN POMPEII The restoration experts carefully retouched the painted areas of the Pompeii fresco that had been degraded over time, and damaged areas were cleaned with a special laser. At the archaeological park the laser cleaning process is called photoablation, which gets rid of the black marks. This is part of restoration work that will use lasers instead of mechanical or chemical cleaning. The laser vaporises dirt and protective layers left during previous restorations.
