IT STARTED IN MOUNT VESUVIUS An acclaimed historian brings the famous volcano to life through the preoccupations of its many pilgrims. Travellers would eat eggs cooked on lava, and many did their scribbling while intoxicated by the local Lacryma Christi wine, poured out by the hermits. There is much to admire here, whether the history of Naples, the cult of Vesuvius, geology, politics or aesthetics — all of which are brought to fiery, pulsing life.
