TEATRO DI SAN CARLO, NAPOLI 1737 Next to Plebiscito Square, one of the symbols of Naples, stands the shrine to Italian opera. Recently added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, Italian opera is a unique art form that combines music, singing, and drama since the 16th century. Singers, musicians, scholars, composers, conductors and directors formed a committee supported by Italy’s leading opera houses and musical institutions, then persuaded UNESCO to add “the practice of opera singing in Italy”.
