WHERE THE ROMANS BUILT THE MOST POWERFUL MILITARY PORT In historical times the bay of the Miseno Peninsula formed the morphological edge of a volcanic crater of Yellow Tuff (Phlegraean Fields). The Misenum roadstead, formed by a series of inlets bordered by small promontories, was suitable for accommodating the massive Roman naval fleet (Classis Misenensis) stationed in the central Tyrrhenian Sea. The military port of Misenum was active for almost five centuries, standing in the present town of Bacoli.
