THE OLDEST SITE OF HAZELNUT CULTIVATION IN THE ENTIRE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN Its cultivation has been attested to since at least the 4th–5th century B.C.. The first certain evidence of specialized hazelnut cultivation in Italy was found in some contracts between settlers and owners dating back to the late Middle Ages (800–900 A.D.), in which hazelnut groves in Campania are widely spoken of.
