SURROUNDED BY THE BAY AND POMPEI-STYLE FRESCOES Sorrento was once a bustling Roman settlement, and you can still feel echoes of its past at the clifftop Bellevue Syrene hotel — from the Roman-era colonnade on the breakfast terrace to the towering fishery ruins on the private beach at the foot of the tufa bluff. Breakfast is served in the gloriously frescoed Villa Pompeiana, a near-perfect replica of the House of Vetti ruin in Pompeii and a glorious reminder of the area’s past.
