Fünf Neapolitanische Lieder (1956) is a work for baritone and chamber orchestra, setting anonymous 17th-century Neapolitan poems, dedicated to Ingeborg Bachmann. Henze described the city as full of "mysterious noises" and a continuous "crossover of all possible tonalities, always tending to modulate into song".
