18TH-CENTURY IRPINIA COMPLEX SEEKING UNESCO CANDIDACY: A SITE OF SPIRITUAL, ARCHITECTURAL, AND HISTORICAL VALUE The Palazzo di Loreto in Mercogliano, Italy (a Benedictine abbey complex), has been nominated to become a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A cooperative protocol was officially signed in May 2026 by the municipality, the Abbey of Montevergine, and the Rotary Club Avellino to support the candidacy. It houses an ancient pharmacy, historic archives, and the national library with roughly 7,000 parchments and 200,000 books. Loreto di Mercogliano | ANSA
