A RENASSANCE WINDOW
TO CAMPANIA'S WINES

06012023 There are many wine territories in Campania: that is those “Campania Stories” that give the name to an event in Irpinia for the presentation of the new vintages of wines produced, with 90 wineries from all over the Region. After the tastings, the review in the historic centre of Gesualdo, one of the “most beautiful villages in Italy”, with its castle, was sponsored by the Municipality. The castle was the home and seat of Prince Carlo Gesualdo’s musical court, one of the most illustrious madrigalists of all time. From Irpinia to Sannio, from Campi Flegrei to Vesuvius, here are the “Campania Stories” | Wine Stories

06032023 Cultural and heritage researcher Arianna Traviglia uses robotic technology to painstakingly reconstruct 2,000-year-old mural paintings in the Archaeological Park. These are a type of mural painting on wet plaster. The project is called RePAIR. Pompeii contains thousands of fresco fragments, and it is close to impossible for a human to reconstruct all the irregular shards into big, meaningful paintings. Technology now allows us to reassemble them from myriad pieces: the robot we use is equipped with two soft humanoid arms, high-definition scanners, cameras and 3D digital-recognition software. Photographer’s camera does not just hold a mirror to the beauty of Naples, rather, it asks its subjects to see themselves as participating in a process where beauty is continuous with social rhythms that span childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. Italian A-lister Pierfrancesco Favino stars as the chief officer of the ship which the two kids, manage to board surreptitiously in the port of Naples, becoming clandestine passengers. 06102023 The Italian island, long in the shadow of its fashionable neighbor is newly chic, but remains deeply authentic, with rocky harbors more likely to dock fishing boats than megayachts. Ischia is one of a trio of islands (known as the Phlegraeans) off Naples that also includes Capri and Procida. With a surface area of almost 18 square miles, the island is home to a number of charming villages to explore like Forio, Ischia Ponte, Sant’Angelo and Casamicciola, among others. Add in natural thermal spas, lush vineyards and deserted coves, and it’s easy to see why Ischia is quickly become one of Italy’s rising destinations. 06132023 Her deep knowledge and understanding of her tradition, and the originality of the arrangements. Hiram Salsano’s focus is the traditional music of southern Italy, in particular that of her home region, the mountain areas of Cilento in Campania. This isn’t a taranta/pizzica album. Salsano’s sources and music are much more varied. The singing is wonderful; liberatingly gutsy and uninhibited while very much in control. She makes smart use of vocal looping to create rhythms and drones. The songs are in Campania’s Cilentano and Napoletano dialects. Hiram Salsano - Bucolica | RootsWorld
06142023 Doctors are generally held in high regard today, but Romans of the first century were skeptical, even scornful, of medical practitioners. In his “Natural History,” Pliny the Elder endeavored to speak out against the medical profession. Scalpels, needles, tweezers, probes, hooks, chisels and drills are as much part of today’s standard medical tool kit as they were during Rome’s imperial era. The most renowned set turned up in the 1770s at Pompei's so-called House of the Surgeon, which was buried under a layer of ash and pumice during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. 06162023 What will it take for Campania to receive the respect it deserves? For nearly two decades, I've followed these wines and watched as the region slowly continues to improve. When was the last time an international marketing campaign promoted the wines of Irpinia? This region encompasses Taurasi, Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, arguably Campania's most important categories. Many producers lack a clear understanding of Campania’s wines in the world market and what the end consumer expects from them. Campania: Change Is Imminent…Or Is It? | Vinous

06262023 The 58-year-old musician Robert Del Naja, artist and Napoli supporter went to document the incredible sights and sounds of a city losing itself in joyous convulsions as the team won their first Scudetto. Unusually for a European city of its size — a population of 920,000 — all the love and pride fixates on a single club. “In Naples, people wear blue to say, ‘We are all the same, we are all one’. That makes it such a unique environment for a football team." Robert Del Naja: Napoli title win was ‘validation of more than 30 years of misery’ | The Atletic
06272023 Walking into a Roman cave. This is Campania, filled with hidden gems, stratified with tradition, and teeming with profound viticulture. I was visiting La Sibilla, a winery named after the homonymous oracle who was believed to reside just a few miles away. The estate lies in the Procida promontory where the Campi Flegrei appellation shines for its personality due to old, ungrafted vines on volcanic soils facing the sea. Even the faint Falanghina, emerges here with quality thanks to tart citrus fruit, vibrancy and chalky minerality. 30 wines from Campania to try in 2023 | Decanter

06292023 The charm offensive starts in historical Hotel Palazzo Murat, home to a former King of Naples. If Positano is New York, its expansive grounds with pool (and stellar restaurant) are the location equivalent of Manhattan, featuring vegetable gardens, walls dripping with jasmine, roses, grapefruit and Meyer lemons. You could dine at bustling beach front Chez Black, but for the best pizza head to Lo Guarracino tucked above neighboring Fornillo Beach.
