THOUSANDS OF FRAGILE ARTIFACTS — FROM VINTAGE WINE TO RESTORED FRESCO — RESIDES AT NAPLES' NATIONAL  ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM Numerous wine jugs, primarily bronze amphorae, from the region were preserved in volcanic ash, revealing a vibrant wine culture. Only 100 or so Vesuvian frescoes are on display. The rest (around 500) are stored in a secure depot on the museum's third floor, off limits to the public, protects thousands of unexhibited items. Shelves are lined with items like wine jugs, drinking cups, and oil lamps. There are even preserved foods like charred seeds, fruits, and a loaf of bread.
