THE WOOD THAT DID NOT BURN IN HERCULANEUM A wooden cabinet was found in Herculaneum, buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE — hit by intense pyroclastic surges that carbonized the wood — effectively preserving it instead of letting it decay. The cupboard still contained everyday objects: cups, glass vessels, and domestic utensils. Wooden furniture from the Roman world almost never survives. This piece now preserved at the Antiquarium of Herculaneum. A 2,000-Year-Old Wooden Cupboard. Still Standing! - National Geographic Adventure | Facebook
